About us
About us
Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) is a leading gold mining company with operations in Papua New Guinea, West Africa and Australia. We have significant gold resources and rank among the top gold producers globally.
About us
Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) is a major global gold producer with operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG), West Africa and Australia. The company’s head office is located in Port Moresby, PNG, and in 2005 LGL established its global corporate base in Brisbane, Australia.

The company is incorporated in PNG, where it operates one of the world’s largest gold mines and processing facilities on Lihir Island in New Ireland province. In June 2008, LGL finalised a merger with Perth-based gold producer Equigold NL. Through the merger, LGL now has operations at Mount Rawdon in Queensland and in Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa. Combined from its three producing operations, LGL has more than 30 million ounces in gold reserves.

In 2009 LGL produced 1.12 million ounces of gold, joining an elite group of gold miners producing in excess of 1 million ounces annually. This comprised a record 853,000 ounces from Lihir Island, 150,000 ounces from Bonikro in its first full 12 months of production and 108,000 ounces from Mount Rawdon.

LGL is publicly listed, with its shares traded on the Australian, Port Moresby and NASDAQ stock exchanges. The company presently has 2.4 billion shares on issue and a market capitalisation exceeding A$8 billion.

In May 2010 LGL entered into a Merger Implementation Agreement with Newcrest Mining Limited, under which it is proposed that Newcrest will acquire all of LGL’s ordinary shares under a Scheme of Arrangement. LGL shareholders will receive one Newcrest share for every 8.43 LGL shares they own, plus A$0.225 cash per share, less any interim dividend declared or paid by LGL for the half year ending 30 June 2010.
